Lebanon's fears over UNIFIL mandate unfounded, says analyst

Political analyst Beshara Charbel said Lebanon's concerns about the possible non-renewal of the UNIFIL mandate are unfounded, adding that the force has not deterred Israel in the past.

Speaking in an interview with Al Arabiya FM, Charbel explained that the presence of international forces provides a guarantor, monitoring, and prevention of violations in line with the mission's principles. However, he noted that southern Lebanon has witnessed multiple wars and repeated incursions, culminating in the establishment of the United Nations force in 2006.

Charbel added that over the years, these forces have failed to prevent Israeli incursions or fulfill their mandate to maintain a weapons-free zone, as rocket sites and tunnels have been established in the area.
