UN warns Sudan aid could halt as funding runs out

The United Nations World Food Programme has warned that humanitarian assistance for millions of Sudanese could soon be suspended, as funds for cash transfers are expected to run out by August and food stocks by September unless urgent financing is provided.

In a report published today on its June humanitarian operations, the agency said that a lack of resources would deprive millions of the most vulnerable people of life-saving food and cash assistance.

The report noted that WFP assisted 3.7 million people in June, including one million living in areas classified as at risk of famine. These include Kadugli, Dilling, and areas surrounding the western Nuba Mountains in South Kordofan, as well as Ambro, Karnoi, Tina, rural El Fasher, Mellit, Kutum, and Tawila in North Darfur.
