Syrian security forces arrest former regime air force general for war crimes

Syrian internal security forces have announced the arrest of Zakaria Mohammed Sanoun, a former air force brigadier general under the previous regime, following a carefully planned security operation.

In a statement posted on X, the Syrian Internal Security Forces said Sanoun served as head of operations for the 22nd Division from 2012 to 2020. This division oversaw air operations at three major military airports.

According to the statement, the detainee is considered one of the main figures involved in planning and carrying out war crimes and airstrikes against civilians during the years of the Syrian uprising. He directly supervised operations at Hama Military Airport, T4 Airbase, and Shayrat Airbase.

The Syrian Internal Security Forces confirmed that Sanoun has been referred to the relevant authorities to complete the investigation, ahead of his appearance in court to face justice.
