Qatar denies detaining Iranian pilots, details airspace incident response

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has categorically denied reports that Iranian pilots were detained, describing the allegations as “misleading.” The ministry stressed that Doha took the necessary measures to defend its territory following a breach of Qatari airspace.

According to the ministry, Qatari authorities made contact with the pilots after they entered Qatari airspace and verified the intended flight path. The statement noted that rules of engagement were followed and attempts were made to communicate with the pilots, but no response was received.

The ministry added that, subsequently, appropriate actions were taken to defend Qatari territory in accordance with international law, emphasizing that details of the incident had previously been clarified through official channels.

Regarding the fate of the pilots, the Foreign Ministry said Qatari search and rescue teams conducted operations to locate their remains, highlighting the teams’ international expertise and capabilities.

Doha confirmed it had coordinated with Iranian authorities to arrange the transfer of one pilot’s remains after they were found by Qatari teams, in line with relevant international humanitarian law.

The ministry also noted that in April it had invited an Iranian team to visit Qatar and review the search and rescue operations, but said Iran had not yet responded to the invitation.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry criticized the timing of the recent statements about the pilots’ detention, arguing that they come as diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region are ongoing.
