Syria welcomes US decision to remove it from terrorism sponsor list

Syria on Tuesday welcomed the decision by the United States to remove it from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, expressing appreciation for what it described as a significant step that opens a new chapter in international relations with Damascus.

In a statement, the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the decision, which follows decades of Syria being listed, is expected to support economic recovery efforts, create favorable conditions for reconstruction, and enhance stability and security in Syria and the region, with positive impacts for the Syrian people and neighboring countries.

The ministry extended its thanks and appreciation to the United States and the administration of President Donald Trump for this important step, expressing hope that further measures will follow to lift remaining restrictions hindering Syria’s recovery and to support its return to an active and natural role in the Arab world and internationally.

The ministry also stressed that Syria looks forward to deepening strategic partnerships and expanding cooperation with the United States and the international community, in ways that serve mutual interests and support stability, development, and economic cooperation in the country.

Earlier, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control issued an updated sanctions list that removed Syria from the state sponsors of terrorism list, following the completion of legal procedures and a congressional review period without objections.
