Trump administration plans $2.8bn arms deal for Israel

US media have reported that Washington is moving toward approving a new $2.8 billion arms deal for Israel, which includes tens of thousands of bombs and bunker-busting warheads. The move comes as the US Department of Defense acknowledges a shortage of munitions linked to the war in Iran.

The Washington Post reported that the package, funded by American taxpayers, includes 20,000 MK-84 bombs, 20,000 BLU-117 bombs, and 20,000 I-2000 Penetrator bunker-busting warheads.

A senior US administration official told Agence France-Presse that "all foreign arms sales proceed according to established procedures," without commenting on deals still being finalized.

The disclosure of the deal comes as the US Department of Defense has acknowledged a "shortage" of munitions related to the war in Iran, after Washington spent $22.3 billion on munitions over the past several months of conflict.

It is worth noting that the Trump administration approved a $7.4 billion arms sale to Israel in February 2025, which included bombs, missiles, and related equipment, among them MK-84 munitions.
