Wildfires in France and Spain force evacuation of 270,000 people

Uncontrolled wildfires in Spain and France have forced authorities to evacuate around 270,000 people.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said that authorities evacuated 167,000 people near Bordeaux and the Gironde region, and 30,000 in the Landes area in the southwest. He added that about 98,000 hectares have burned since the start of the year.

In Spain, the Interior Ministry announced the evacuation of 70,000 people. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the priority is to save lives, warning that the fires raging near Madrid are proving difficult to contain.
