Russian airstrikes kill 12 in Kyiv and surrounding areas

Ukrainian authorities said at least 12 people were killed and many others injured in Kyiv and surrounding areas on Tuesday, marking the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital.

According to Reuters, Kyiv and nearby regions have faced successive waves of drone attacks over the past five days, resulting in civilian deaths and damage to homes and warehouses.

The agency reported that many of the drones are newer models equipped with jet engines, making them difficult to intercept. The near-continuous attacks have disrupted daily life for millions, with air raid sirens sounding for hours at a time.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said Russian drones and ballistic missiles targeted residential areas and railway infrastructure during the intense overnight strikes.

He called on Ukraine's allies to increase economic pressure on Russia and to resume discussions on using frozen Russian assets abroad to fund Ukraine's war effort.

In a post on X, he wrote, "It is time for the Kremlin to realize that merely simulating diplomacy no longer works," urging allies to provide more air defense systems as Ukraine's supply of Patriot interceptor missiles, capable of stopping Russian ballistic missiles, is running critically low.

Ukraine's air force said it managed to shoot down five ballistic missiles. Kyiv recently received a small shipment of Patriot interceptor missiles.

Russian strikes also targeted a border crossing with Romania, a NATO member, in the Black Sea region of Odesa.

Repeated attacks on ports and ships in the area have brought Ukraine's vital agricultural exports to a near standstill, further increasing pressure on global food prices.
