Trump proposes FIFA chief Infantino for next UN secretary-general

US President Donald Trump has put forward FIFA President Gianni Infantino as a candidate for the next United Nations secretary-general.

Trump’s proposal comes as Antonio Guterres’s term is set to end in December. Reports indicate that Trump views Infantino as a globally respected figure with strong relationship-building skills, noting their previous cooperation during the organization of the 2026 World Cup.

Trump has also recognized the Swiss executive’s efforts to connect FIFA with the White House. However, his suggestion diverges from the UN’s informal practice of regional rotation for the secretary-general position.

To secure the role, Infantino would need the backing of 15 UN Security Council members, with no veto from any of the five permanent members, followed by approval from the General Assembly.

US administration officials believe that, following Trump’s lead, Infantino’s extensive international network could help him attract further nominations beyond Trump’s endorsement.
