The United States has raised its travel advisory for Kenya from level two to level three, urging its citizens to reconsider travel plans amid health concerns linked to an Ebola outbreak and a rise in confirmed cases to nine, according to the latest update from Kenyan authorities on Tuesday, October 20.

The US State Department explained in its updated travel warning that the decision was due to health risks, as well as concerns about crime, kidnapping, terrorism, civil unrest, and traffic hazards. Level three advises travelers to reconsider their plans, rather than simply exercise increased caution as recommended at level two.

Health concerns have intensified following reports of Ebola cases in Kenya, which began with a Kenyan businessman who returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Subsequent cases have been linked to him, prompting efforts to trace contacts and contain the spread of the virus.

Kenyan health authorities announced on Tuesday that the number of confirmed cases had risen to nine after a new infection was recorded. They noted that all cases are from a single group, and there is no evidence so far of transmission beyond this cluster. Authorities have managed to trace 134 out of 135 potential contacts.

The journey of the first patient, who traveled from the Congo through Uganda to Nairobi, has raised concerns about health screening for cross-border travelers, especially as subsequent cases have involved his family members and healthcare workers who treated him.
