US and European allies push IAEA to refer Iran to UN Security Council

The United States and its allies—the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—are pressuring other members of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to support a resolution referring Iran to the United Nations Security Council.

This move follows a previous resolution adopted on June 12, 2025, which stated that Iran had violated its nuclear non-proliferation commitments by failing to fully cooperate with an investigation into uranium traces found at undeclared sites, according to Al-Sharq.

The IAEA Board of Governors comprises 35 countries. If Iran is referred to the Security Council, the dispute over the agency's access to Iranian nuclear sites could escalate. Last year, the board adopted two resolutions demanding that Iran disclose its stockpile of enriched uranium and grant the agency full access for verification.
