Singapore investigates British band for displaying Palestinian flag at concert

Singaporean police and media authorities have launched an investigation into a concert by Massive Attack on Wednesday, citing a "potential breach of licensing conditions" after the British band ended their show by displaying the Palestinian flag.

Police said in a statement on Friday that reports had been filed and investigations were ongoing after two band members raised the flag on stage to cheers from the audience.

Singapore prohibits the public display of foreign national symbols or emblems without a license or exemption. The Palestinian flag is considered particularly sensitive due to the Gaza war and the presence of a Muslim community in Singapore.

In 2023, the Ministry of Home Affairs said, "The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas is an emotive issue. We advise against displaying or wearing any symbols related to this conflict in public, given heightened sensitivities."

The ministry added, "Peace and harmony among Singapore's different races and religions should not be taken for granted, and we must not allow external events to affect the peace and harmony we enjoy in Singapore."

About 74 percent of Singapore's resident population is Chinese, 13.6 percent Malay, and 9 percent Indian, with 3.3 percent classified as 'Others.' Muslims make up around 15 percent of the population.

The band, formed in Bristol in 1988, is known for its outspoken political views. During the concert, Massive Attack screened videos targeting US tech company Palantir and highlighting conflicts such as the US war with Iran and wars in Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine.
