Maradona medical team trial delayed amid courtroom drama

The trial of the medical team responsible for treating late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has become one of the country’s most dramatic court cases, with more than 25 hearings marked by heated arguments, insults, and emotional outbursts, as controversy continues over the circumstances of the star’s death.

Judges have decided to postpone the case for another month, with no clear end date in sight, despite months of proceedings and testimony from around 70 witnesses and defendants.

The legal process has been ongoing since April, with seven members of Maradona’s medical team facing charges of medical negligence in connection with his death in November 2020. 

Prosecutors argue that inadequate medical care contributed to his death, while the accused deny any wrongdoing, insisting Maradona died of natural causes.

Court sessions have featured emotional scenes, including repeated breakdowns by Maradona’s daughters in the courtroom, verbal clashes with some of the defendants, and the presentation of scale models of Maradona’s home, along with photos and evidence used to reconstruct the care he received in his final days.

Maradona died at the age of 60 from heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, about two weeks after undergoing brain surgery to remove a blood clot.

Although the court initially aimed to conclude the trial in August, the large number of testimonies and the complexity of the case have led to further delays. The seven defendants continue to maintain their innocence, while Maradona’s family insists on holding those responsible for his death accountable.
