Global youth unemployment rate to reach 12.4% in 2025, ILO says

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has reported that the global youth unemployment rate is expected to rise to 12.4% in 2025, up from 12.3% in 2024, representing around 67 million young people out of work.

The ILO's annual report noted that the proportion of young people who are neither working, studying, nor in training has increased to 20%, amounting to more than 257 million individuals worldwide.

The organization expects the youth unemployment rate to stabilize at 12.3% in both 2026 and 2027, highlighting ongoing challenges in the labor market.

Impact of artificial intelligence on jobs

The report indicated that technological advances, particularly artificial intelligence, are affecting job opportunities for young people, with a decline in roles that have traditionally served as entry points to the labor market.

It added that 6.1% of jobs held by young people are highly susceptible to the effects of artificial intelligence.
