Arab League reaffirms support for Libya’s political stability

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy has reiterated the organization’s commitment to supporting Libyan efforts aimed at achieving consensus and stability. He emphasized ongoing coordination with various Libyan parties, concerned Arab states, and the United Nations mission to promote an inclusive political process that safeguards the interests of the Libyan people.

Fahmy made these remarks during a meeting with Taher Al-Baour, Libya’s acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, on the sidelines of the 166th session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level in Cairo.

During the meeting, both sides underscored the importance of advancing the political process in Libya and discussed several Arab issues of mutual concern.

Support for Libya’s unity and sovereignty

Fahmy stressed the Arab League’s longstanding position on Libya, foremost among which is preserving the country’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, while rejecting interference in its internal affairs.

He added that the League supports a Libyan-owned and Libyan-led political process aimed at ending transitional phases, unifying state institutions, and holding comprehensive national elections.

Developments in Libya’s political process

The meeting also addressed recent developments in the political process facilitated by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, and the importance of building on steps that foster consensus among Libyan parties and resolve outstanding issues.

The two sides highlighted the need to enhance Arab consultation and coordination on regional developments and current issues, in order to create conditions conducive to sustainable progress in Libya’s political process.
