Pentagon official: Iran conflict depletes US munitions, costs $33.4bn

The inspector general at the US Department of Defense has revealed that the conflict with Iran has led to a decline in American munitions stockpiles and put pressure on supply chains, prompting the Pentagon to take steps to accelerate procurement and production and to bolster strategic reserves.

The inspector general explained that the Pentagon is streamlining contracting and purchasing procedures, reducing the time needed to produce munitions, and building up reserves of vital materials and selected munitions to ensure US forces can respond quickly to any emergency or potential military escalation.

In addition, the inspector general reported that the cost of the conflict with Iran reached approximately $33.4 billion as of June 30, with ongoing military operations continuing to impact US defense resources and stockpiles.
