Syrian president reaffirms claim to Golan, rejects Israeli annexation

Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa reaffirmed his country's commitment to sovereignty over the Golan Heights, stressing that all Israeli annexation measures are null and void under UN Security Council Resolution 497. He made the remarks during an address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

President Al-Sharaa stated that Syria's national principles are further strengthened by the rule of law and the will of the people, adding that any attempts to impose a new reality would not affect the legitimacy of the Syrian state, its legal authority, or the application of international law.

Condemnation of Israeli military operations

The Syrian president noted that Israel has carried out around 500 air and artillery strikes on Syria, conducted more than 1,200 incursions, and made nearly 300 arrests and detentions of Syrians, actions he said threaten the country's stability and run counter to the international community's stance.

Commitment to 1974 agreement and call for withdrawal

Al-Sharaa also affirmed that Syria's declared position remains based on adherence to the 1974 agreement and calls for the withdrawal of Israeli occupation forces to the lines of December 8, 2024, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
