Niger military council says situation under control after Niamey attacks

Niger’s military council announced it is gradually regaining control of the situation following hours of gunfire in the capital.

The capital, Niamey, witnessed sustained gunfire and explosions heard in several areas on Saturday morning.

Terrorists attacked Diori Hamani International Airport and attempted to breach the security perimeter around the presidential palace. The attackers also targeted Base 101, a major military facility in Niamey, but security forces regained control.

Security forces have launched search operations, with officials reporting that some attackers were neutralized while others fled. Niger has been under military rule since a 2023 coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
