The US news site Axios reported that President Donald Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, during a phone call on Thursday, to take steps to implement his peace plan for the Gaza Strip.

According to the site, citing two sources familiar with the call, Trump stressed his intention to proceed with his Gaza peace plan regardless of whether Netanyahu remains in office or power shifts to the opposition, following Israel's elections held on October 27.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has officially tasked Gadi Eisenkot, leader of the "Yishar" party, with forming a new government after consultations with parliamentary blocs showed Eisenkot received recommendations from 67 Knesset members, compared to 46 who supported Netanyahu. Seven members abstained from endorsing any candidate.

Under Israeli law, Eisenkot has 28 days to form a government, with the possibility of a 14-day extension at the president's discretion.
