The local authorities in Yemen’s Taiz province have condemned in the strongest terms the Houthi militia’s action today to prevent drinking water tankers from the Al-Dhabab wells from entering Taiz city through their military checkpoints.

According to Yemen’s Saba news agency, the Taiz authorities described the move as a dangerous escalation that threatens to deprive hundreds of thousands of residents of their basic right to water, further worsening their suffering under the suffocating siege imposed on the city, the continued closure of roads, and the prevention of food, medicine, and fuel derivatives from reaching the city, in addition to the indiscriminate shelling of residential areas and the resulting civilian casualties.

In a statement issued by it today, the local authorities called on the United Nations, the UN Security Council, and international humanitarian and human rights organizations to act urgently and exert effective pressure on the Houthi militia to lift restrictions on water tanker entry, open roads, and ensure the safe and continuous flow of water, food, medicine, and relief aid without conditions or obstacles.

The Taiz authorities stressed that deliberately depriving civilians of essential needs constitutes collective punishment prohibited under international humanitarian law and requires a firm international stance that goes beyond statements of condemnation to practical measures to end these violations and protect the lives of the population.
