Heavy rain lashes Hawaii as Tropical Storm Lala approaches

The Big Island of Hawaii was hit by heavy rainfall as Tropical Storm Lala approached the archipelago, with warnings issued about strong winds and high waves that could pose risks to residents.

The governor of Hawaii declared a state of emergency as the storm drew closer to the Pacific islands, bringing winds reaching around 100 kilometers per hour.

Authorities issued a hurricane warning for Hawaii County, which includes the Big Island, while a tropical storm warning remained in effect for Maui, Molokai, and Kahoolawe to the northwest.

The National Hurricane Center, in its latest update at 15:00 GMT, said the Big Island could experience hurricane-force destructive winds later today, noting that tropical storm-force winds had already begun to affect the island.

The center warned of the impact of heavy rain, explaining that it could lead to life-threatening flooding and possible mudslides, especially in areas with steep terrain.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted the Big Island could receive up to 64 centimeters of rain, along with rising sea levels due to the storm's effects.

It also warned of dangerous surf accompanying the storm, noting that these hazardous weather and sea conditions could persist through Sunday.
