Japan issues highest landslide warning in Yakushima as Typhoon Krovanh hits

Japan's Meteorological Agency on Saturday issued its highest level-5 emergency landslide warning for the town of Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan.

The alert followed continuous heavy rainfall since last night, triggered by Typhoon Krovanh—the 24th typhoon of the year—and a tropical depression.

In the Onoida area of Yakushima, rainfall over 24 hours reached 490.5 millimeters, setting a local record. Maximum wind speeds were recorded at 25.9 meters per second.

The agency said Typhoon Krovanh is currently located over the sea north of Okinawa Prefecture, while the tropical depression is situated over the sea southeast of the same region.
