Nearly 94,000 displaced in Yemen amid Houthi offensive: IOM

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that the total number of internally displaced people in Yemen has risen to nearly 94,000 due to attacks by Houthi militias, as conflict intensifies and military operations expand since the beginning of this month.

A spokesperson for the IOM said in a press statement on Monday that 93,864 people have been newly displaced in various regions of Yemen as a result of the ongoing conflict, which has escalated since the start of the month.

The governorates of Taiz and Lahij have been the most affected by the displacement. In Taiz, the Jabal Habashi district recorded 18,840 displaced people, while 9,966 others fled from the neighboring Al-Ma'afer district.

In Lahij, 16,464 people were displaced in the Al-Mudaraba and Ras Al-Ara district, while the Tuban district saw 2,892 people displaced.

The IOM noted that displacement has also been recorded in the governorates of Aden, Hodeidah, and Abyan, as well as other districts in Taiz, reflecting the widening geographic scope of the current conflict.

The organization called on donors to provide urgent support to meet the needs of newly displaced families, particularly in terms of shelter, water, and sanitation services.

Last Friday, the IOM announced the temporary suspension of all its field movements and operational activities in Yemen, citing deteriorating security conditions resulting from intensified fighting in the southwest of the country.

The UN-affiliated organization warned that the number of displaced people is likely to continue rising as clashes persist between government forces and the Iran-backed Houthi militia.
