UNICEF warns over 2.2 million Yemeni children at risk of severe malnutrition

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned on Monday of the consequences of escalating conflict in Yemen, noting that around 130,000 people, including 71,000 children, have been displaced in the past three weeks. The agency also reported the closure of 243 schools, leaving nearly 137,000 children out of education.

In a statement, UNICEF said it has verified the deaths of 15 children, injuries to 14 others, and the disappearance of three children since September 3, with other incidents still under investigation.

UNICEF further warned that more than 2.2 million children under the age of five are at risk of malnutrition and hunger this year.

The agency renewed its call to protect children, civilians, facilities, and civilian infrastructure, and to uphold international humanitarian law to ensure safe and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid.
