UK prime minister tells Trump Britain committed to securing Hormuz Strait

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed Britain's commitment to ensuring the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Burnham made the remarks during a phone call with US President Donald Trump, in which the two leaders discussed maritime security in the strait, according to Asharq.

The call came as a British maritime authority reported receiving a notification about an attack on a vessel 17 nautical miles east of Dubai in the UAE, with no casualties among the crew.

Iran continues to threaten maritime traffic in the strait—which handles one-fifth of the world’s energy needs—by targeting vessels and insisting that ships must obtain permission from Tehran to pass through.

European Union member states are leading efforts to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to ensure the continued flow of maritime traffic and protect key shipping lanes in the region.

European leaders have previously pledged to launch a multinational naval mission in the strait, as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.
