Damascus urges Iran to respect Syria’s sovereignty, review its policies

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that Damascus’s position on Iran’s policies is shaped by 14 years of war, violence, displacement, and destruction in the country. The ministry stressed that Iran’s support for the previous Syrian regime at the expense of the Syrian people has complicated the crisis and brought further suffering.

The ministry explained that establishing a new relationship between Syria and Iran requires respect for Syria’s sovereignty and the will of its people, as well as a review of past policies and the building of mutual trust.

The foreign ministry added that Syria is no longer a sphere of influence for any country, and that its foreign relations will be based on mutual respect, national interests, and equality.

In the same context, the ministry affirmed that Syria does not seek hostility or subordination to any state, but rather aims to establish balanced relations that respect national sovereignty and the choices of the Syrian people.
