Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid and France national team star, has apologized to China following recent remarks about an image likening him to Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Communist revolution.

In a statement, Mbappe said: “During a recent interview, I commented on a photo of myself. My remarks reflected a misunderstanding, and I now realize they have caused offense to many people in China and Chinese communities worldwide.”

He added: “I apologize to everyone my words have upset. That was never my intention. I have deep respect for the Chinese people and their history, and I am sincerely sorry.”

Mbappe’s apology came after China’s state broadcaster CCTV announced it would suspend its coverage of La Liga, including matches featuring the player, following his comments about a satirical image merging his face with that of Mao Zedong.

Chinese companies, including Dongpeng Beverage Group and dairy firms Mengniu and Milkground, also announced they would end their partnerships with Mbappe as a result of the incident.

Mbappe had been asked in an interview about the funniest memes of himself, and replied that the one that amused him most was an image depicting him as a Chinese dictator, noting that he shares it with his friends.
