Real Madrid turns to Bernardo Silva and midfield trio after losing Rodri bid

Real Madrid has decided to stick with its current midfield lineup and will not pursue an alternative signing after its failed attempt to bring in Rodri, who is reportedly close to joining Barcelona, despite the club’s need to strengthen the position.

According to media reports, Real Madrid was disappointed by Rodri’s decision to favor a move to Barcelona. The club had targeted the midfielder following his standout performances with Spain at the World Cup, where he led his team to victory and was named the tournament’s best player.

The club’s efforts to reinforce the squad came after a disappointing, trophyless season, during which Real Madrid made several signings, including Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Carlos Espe, Marc Cucurella, and Bernardo Silva.

Radio Cadena COPE reported that Rodri’s change of heart was a source of frustration for Real Madrid. However, other media outlets indicated that the club does not plan to activate a "backup plan" or sign another midfielder before the transfer window closes, believing the current squad is capable of competing.

Manager Jose Mourinho is expected to rely on Bernardo Silva in midfield, with Federico Valverde, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurélien Tchouaméni also among his options.

Opting to stick with the current roster is seen as a risky bet for Real Madrid, especially as criticism of the midfield continues following Toni Kroos’s retirement in summer 2024.
