Hamza Abdelkarim backs Yamal for Ballon d'Or, calls him most deserving

Barcelona striker Hamza Abdelkarim has expressed his support for teammate Lamine Yamal to win the Ballon d'Or, saying he is the most deserving player in the squad.

Speaking during the signing of his new contract with Barcelona, the Egyptian forward said: "There are many players at Barcelona who deserve it, but Lamine Yamal deserves it the most. I look forward to playing alongside him."

Yamal is competing with 29 other players for the Ballon d'Or after finishing second in the 2025 edition behind France's Ousmane Dembele.

Yamal helped Barcelona win La Liga last season and also lifted the World Cup with Spain.

Abdelkarim spoke about his experience at Barcelona, stressing that he is working to improve his level, while noting that Hansi Flick identifies the areas he needs to work on and those he already excels at.

He said: "Coach Hansi Flick tells me what I need to improve and what I am already doing well. Barcelona's playing style is unique and different from any other club, so I have to adapt and contribute effectively."

The Egyptian striker also highlighted the value of learning from other forwards, adding: "There are many strikers to learn from. I try to enjoy watching all the forwards I see."

Abdelkarim expressed his happiness with the support he receives in Egypt, saying: "The support I get from so many people in my country gives me great confidence. I think they are proud of me."

He also spoke about the atmosphere at Barcelona, confirming he has received support from the coaching staff and teammates since his arrival. He said: "I feel a lot of support from the technical staff; they help me develop and improve. My teammates have supported me from day one. The atmosphere here is like a family—it's a place you look forward to going to as soon as you wake up in the morning."

Regarding his goals with the team, Abdelkarim avoided setting personal targets, stressing that his priority is to help Barcelona win trophies.

He said: "I prefer to let my actions speak for my goals. I want to help the team win titles, and the Champions League if possible."

The Barcelona striker also discussed the possibility of playing a Champions League final at Spotify Camp Nou in 2029, one season before his current contract ends. He said: "It would be amazing, especially when you see the trophies in the club's museum. Playing that final would be great, but for now, the priority is to focus on the current season."
