Barcelona targets free-agent full-backs ahead of winter transfer window

Spanish club Barcelona is closely monitoring the list of players available in the transfer market ahead of the upcoming winter window, aiming to reinforce both full-back positions despite ongoing financial challenges.

Barcelona made significant efforts this summer to overhaul the squad, particularly in attack, following the reinstatement of the 1:1 signing rule. With much of the plan already implemented, head coach Hansi Flick and the club’s sporting management see a need to further bolster the full-back roles, taking advantage of available market options.

According to the newspaper Sport, the club’s scouts are keeping a close eye on specialist full-backs, especially those nearing the end of their contracts, as there are several intriguing options that fit within the club’s limited budget.

Currently, Barcelona has several players who can cover the flanks, including Eric Garcia and Jol Kondé on the right, and Joao Cancelo, Chavi Espar, and Alejandro Balde on the left side, although some are naturally right-footed. Balde has endured a difficult start to the season and could depart in January if he wishes, particularly after coming close to leaving last summer.

Options to strengthen the left-back position

The club has previously considered players such as Grimaldo, who recently moved to Atletico Madrid, and Juventus’ Cambiaso, who was closely monitored last season, though signing him would have required a significant financial outlay.

Another name under consideration is David Raum, RB Leipzig’s captain and full-back, whose contract is nearing its end and who is well known to Hansi Flick thanks to his international experience and consistent performances. Additionally, Tyrick Mitchell, Crystal Palace’s left-back and former England international, is approaching free agency, making him a potential target for the Catalan club.
