Saudi Pro League 2026-27 season kicks off today with 18 teams

The 2026-27 season of the Saudi Pro League, known as the Roshn League, kicks off today, Thursday, with 18 teams set to compete in 306 matches over 34 rounds. This new edition brings high ambitions on technical, organizational, and investment levels, supported by the ongoing backing of Saudi sports.

Al-Nassr enters the season as defending champions after securing the previous title with 86 points. Al-Hilal aims to reclaim the championship after finishing last season as runners-up, just two points behind and unbeaten. Al-Ahli approaches the campaign with strong momentum following their Elite Asian Champions League title, while Al-Qadsiah continues to establish itself among the top contenders after finishing fourth. Al-Ittihad is also seeking a strong return to the title race.

The league continues to see economic growth. Omar Maghrabi, Chairman of the Saudi Pro League, revealed that league revenues have increased by 115% over the past three years, with 82% of these revenues distributed to clubs, reflecting the league's expanding investment base and growing financial resources.

The Saudi Arabian Football Federation is working to enhance the technical, organizational, and investment value of the competition, aiming to place the Saudi Pro League among the world’s top ten leagues, capitalizing on the rapid development of Saudi football.

This season carries added significance after last year’s close competition at the top, with just nine points separating champions Al-Nassr and fourth-placed Al-Qadsiah, and the title decided in the final round. This sets the stage for an intense battle for the championship and continental qualification spots.

Al-Nassr begins its title defense seeking to add a new league title to its record of 11 championships. Al-Hilal is led by an Italian coach as the club looks to reclaim the trophy and extend their historic tally of 21 league titles.

Al-Ahli enters the season with a new coaching staff led by Dutchman Marino Pušić, replacing German Matthias Jaissle, aiming for a tenth league title. Al-Qadsiah continues its ambitious sporting and investment project, further cementing its place among the league’s elite.

Mid-table clubs are also looking to improve their standings, while this season sees the return of three teams to the top flight: Abha, champions of the First Division, Al-Faisaly, and Al-Dariyah, who make their debut in the league.

The opening round features three matches: Abha vs. Al-Hazm, Al-Shabab vs. Al-Qadsiah, and Al-Dariyah vs. Al-Ahli. The action continues Friday with Al-Fayha vs. an unnamed team, Al-Hilal vs. Al-Faisaly, and Al-Ettifaq vs. Al-Riyadh, concluding Saturday with Al-Taawoun vs. Al-Khaleej, Al-Nassr vs. Al-Fateh, and Al-Ittihad vs. Al-Kholood.
