Klopp recalls Ter Stegen as Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper, sets new pecking order

Marc-André ter Stegen is set to reclaim his role as Germany’s starting goalkeeper after new national team coach Jürgen Klopp decided to restore the Barcelona keeper to the first eleven, according to Bild.

The newspaper reports that Bayern Munich’s backup goalkeeper, Jonas Urbig, is now the leading candidate for the second-choice spot, while Alexander Nübel, who recently joined Besiktas, is ranked third among the squad’s goalkeepers.

Klopp’s decision follows Ter Stegen’s loan move to Ajax at the start of the current season, a step that helped him regain his place in the national team setup.

Ter Stegen had previously lost his spot in the Germany squad due to a series of injuries at Barcelona, which saw him sidelined and replaced by Oliver Baumann as the team’s main goalkeeper during that period.

Manuel Neuer later returned to Germany’s goal for the World Cup, taking over from Baumann, before the situation shifted again with Klopp’s appointment.

Klopp took charge of the German national team after their exit in the round of 16 at the World Cup, a result that led to the departure of former coach Julian Nagelsmann.

Meanwhile, Baumann previously stated that Klopp had spoken to him recently and informed him he would not be called up to the national team in the future.
