Jurgen Klopp appointed Germany coach through 2030 after Nagelsmann exit

The German Football Association has appointed Jurgen Klopp as the new head coach of the national team, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following Germany’s exit from the 2026 World Cup in North America. Bernd Neuendorf, president of the association, announced the appointment at a press conference in Frankfurt, expressing the federation’s satisfaction with the decision.

Klopp, 59, is regarded as one of the leading coaches of his generation and is expected to sign a contract running until 2030, which coincides with the next World Cup. Since 2025, Klopp has been under contract with Austrian company Red Bull as “Head of Global Football,” overseeing clubs in the group such as RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, and New York Red Bulls.

German media reports indicated that Klopp’s relationship with Red Bull will be terminated without a transfer fee, in exchange for a €1 million ($1.1 million) donation to the company’s charity, Wings for Life.

The German Football Association had dismissed Nagelsmann after Germany lost to Paraguay on penalties in the round of 32 at the World Cup, marking the team’s third consecutive setback since winning their fourth title in 2014. Germany exited in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022, and managed just one knockout-stage win in their last five major tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals of Euro 2024.

Klopp achieved notable success with Mainz and Borussia Dortmund before becoming a legend at Liverpool, where he led the team to the Premier League title in 2020 after a 30-year wait, as well as the club’s sixth European Cup. He stepped down as Liverpool manager in 2024 due to exhaustion.
