Sporting Lisbon defeat Galatasaray 3-1 in Champions League opener

Sporting Lisbon of Portugal defeated Turkish side Galatasaray 3-1 at home on Wednesday in the opening round of the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Galatasaray took an early lead in the fifth minute when Sporting’s Gonçalo Inácio scored an own goal. Sporting equalized through Geny Catamo in the 27th minute, before Luis Suárez put the hosts ahead with a penalty in the 57th minute. Rodrigo Zalazar sealed the win with a third goal in the 63rd minute.

With this result, Sporting Lisbon claimed their first three points of the tournament, while Galatasaray remain without a point.

Sporting Lisbon will visit French club Lens in the next round, while Galatasaray will host Spain’s Barcelona.
