UEFA revises yellow card suspension rules for European competitions

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced changes to its yellow card suspension rules for its three continental competitions—the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League—starting from the 2026-2027 season. Under the new regulations, players and technical staff will receive an automatic one-match suspension after accumulating four yellow cards that do not result in a red card, instead of three as previously enforced.

The updated rules also stipulate further suspensions after every additional two yellow cards, meaning suspensions will be triggered upon receiving a sixth, eighth, tenth yellow card, and so on.

UEFA stated that it has informed national associations and participating clubs of these changes ahead of the new season as part of its ongoing updates to competition regulations.

The league phase of the Champions League is set to begin on September 8, followed by the Europa League on September 16, and the Conference League on October 15.
