Xavi confirms Dutch players in Saudi Pro League remain eligible for Netherlands squad

Xavi Hernandez, the new head coach of the Netherlands national team, has confirmed that Dutch players competing in the Saudi Pro League will remain eligible for selection, praising the league's growing competitiveness and strength.

Speaking at his official unveiling, the Spanish coach explained that his squad choices will not be based on players’ names, ages, or the leagues they play in, but rather on technical standards and readiness, as he seeks the best options to serve the national team.

Regarding Dutch players currently in the Saudi Pro League, Xavi stressed that their presence there will not hinder their chances of being called up, given his appreciation for the league’s competitive nature. He reiterated that selection will depend on each player’s performance and technical preparedness.

Xavi also addressed reports that the Dutch Football Association had negotiated with other candidates, including Spain’s Pep Guardiola and Dutchman Arne Slot, before appointing him. He emphasized that leading the national team is a great honor, regardless of his position in the selection process.

The new coach added that he has already begun communicating with key squad members, including captain and defender Virgil van Dijk and Frenkie de Jong, as he prepares to finalize the roster for upcoming international fixtures.

Xavi said he has drawn inspiration throughout his career from legends Johan Cruyff and Louis van Gaal, expressing his desire to combine attractive football with positive results as quickly as possible, while also giving full confidence to young players when deserved.

The Netherlands’ immediate goals focus on the UEFA Nations League and the qualifiers for the European Championship, alongside a long-term project targeting the 2030 FIFA World Cup finals.
