Belgium appoints Dutch coach Mark van Bommel after two-year hiatus

The Belgian Football Association has confirmed the appointment of a new head coach for the national team, known as the Red Devils, following the dismissal of Frenchman Rudi Garcia, who guided the squad to the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup.

According to Belgian media reports, the association has chosen Dutchman Mark van Bommel, 49, as the new manager. Both parties have agreed to a two-year contract that will run through the UEFA Euro 2028 tournament.

The former Bayern Munich, Barcelona, and AC Milan midfielder became the leading candidate for the Belgian FA after the team's World Cup exit to Spain. Van Bommel is highly regarded in Belgium, having won three trophies with Royal Antwerp.

Since leaving his position at Antwerp two years ago, van Bommel has been without a club, having turned down several coaching offers while waiting for the right opportunity. It appears he has now found it with the Belgian national team.
