Senegal appoints Patrick Vieira as new national team coach

The Senegalese Football Federation has announced the appointment of Frenchman Patrick Vieira, who was born in Dakar, as the new head coach of the national team. The move comes while the dismissal process for former coach Pape Thiaw is still pending.

In an official statement, the federation said the length of Vieira's contract has not yet been disclosed, adding that the date of his official unveiling and further steps in his appointment will be announced later.

Vieira, 50, brings extensive managerial experience, having previously coached New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa.

The new coach faces a major challenge in leading the "Lions of Teranga" to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with qualifiers set to begin next September.
