Ajax sign Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen on season-long loan

Ajax Amsterdam have announced the signing of German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, 34, on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with no option to buy.

The club stated that Ter Stegen joins to strengthen Ajax's squad after losing his starting spot at Barcelona under coach Hansi Flick, following the Catalan side's signing of goalkeeper Joan García from Espanyol.

Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff highlighted Ter Stegen's impressive track record, describing him as an immediate asset to the team. Cruyff added that the club knows the goalkeeper well and is pleased to welcome him to Ajax.

Ter Stegen emphasized the importance of restoring Ajax's footballing stature, expressing his eagerness to regain form after struggling with injuries and limited appearances, which led to him missing the 2026 World Cup.

Deal details and recent signings

According to SPORT, negotiations between Ajax and Barcelona included a dispute over Ter Stegen's salary, which is around €15 million per year before tax—well above Ajax's budget. Ajax will cover just 10% of his wages, with Barcelona paying the remainder.

Ter Stegen's contract with Barcelona runs until 2028, and the loan agreement does not include a purchase option.

In other transfer news, Ajax recently signed German midfielder Julian Brandt, 30, on a three-year deal after he was a free agent. The club also loaned Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare from Wolverhampton Wanderers and signed Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo from Al Hilal for around €20 million on a five-year contract.
