Paris Saint-Germain defeat Aston Villa to retain UEFA Super Cup

Paris Saint-Germain retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 on Wednesday in Salzburg, Austria, securing the French side's second consecutive title in the competition.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for PSG in the 20th minute with a superb strike, giving the reigning Champions League winners the early advantage.

Aston Villa, last season's Europa League champions, leveled the match just before halftime through Bryan Madjo, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1.

PSG regained the lead in the 61st minute when Desire Doue netted the second goal. Aston Villa were unable to find another equalizer, allowing the French club to hold on for the win.

The match was officiated by Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who was unable to participate in the World Cup after being denied entry to the United States.

PSG first lifted the UEFA Super Cup last year after defeating Tottenham Hotspur on penalties, and have now successfully defended their title.

The French champions will now prepare to defend their French Super Cup crown, facing Lens on Sunday as they look to continue their winning run this season.
