Dutch FA in talks with Roberto Martinez to replace Koeman as national coach

The Dutch Football Association has entered serious negotiations with Spanish coach Roberto Martinez to take charge of the national team, a move that could end the Netherlands’ 48-year tradition of appointing only local managers.

This development follows the departure of Ronald Koeman after the Netherlands were eliminated from the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup, losing to Morocco on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, Martinez has stepped down as Portugal’s coach following their defeat to Spain in the World Cup round of 16. The Spanish manager previously led Belgium from 2016 to 2022, and Portugal from 2023 to 2026.

The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported that talks with the 53-year-old Martinez are aimed at appointing him to lead the team at Euro 2028 and the 2030 World Cup, which will be hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco.

First foreign coach since 1978

No Dutch candidates have emerged to succeed Koeman, especially after Arne Slot declined the role. If an agreement is reached, Roberto Martinez would become the first foreign coach to lead the Netherlands since Austrian Ernst Happel in 1978.
