Nordic football federations withdraw confidence in FIFA chief Infantino

Six national football associations from the Nordic countries have announced they no longer have confidence in the leadership of FIFA President Gianni Infantino, amid widespread criticism of the organization’s governance and decision-making processes.

The football federations of Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over FIFA’s governance, urging binding guarantees to prevent private ownership from influencing the organization or its tournaments.

The associations affirmed their unity with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and voiced support for measures proposed by UEFA to address current challenges. They also backed calls from the Asian Football Confederation, CONCACAF, and UEFA for an independent external investigation into matters related to the "FIFA Forward Enterprise" initiative.

Meanwhile, Infantino is facing mounting pressure to resign after his plans to sell World Cup commercial rights to private investors triggered backlash and criticism from various continental federations.

Calls for comprehensive governance review

The statement called on FIFA to conduct a thorough and independent review of its governance framework to assess its adherence to principles of independence, checks and balances, transparency, and accountability—principles that were intended to be strengthened with the adoption of the 2016 reform program.
