Japan’s Kazuyoshi Miura scores at 59 in Emperor’s Cup match

Japanese football star Kazuyoshi Miura scored his first official goal in four years during Fukushima United’s 7-0 victory over Iwaki Furukawa in the Emperor’s Cup on Sunday night.

Miura, nicknamed “King Kazu,” found the net in the 52nd minute to extend Fukushima’s lead to 5-0, finishing a teammate’s pass from inside the penalty area with a direct shot. He achieved the feat at 59 years and 149 days old.

His goal sparked jubilant celebrations among teammates on the pitch and on the bench, before Miura was substituted three minutes later.

This was Miura’s first official goal since November 2022, when he scored for his former club Suzuka PG—now known as Atletico Suzuka—in a Japanese league match against FC Osaka.

Remarkable career and historic achievements

Miura is preparing for his record-extending 42nd professional season after extending his loan with third-division side Fukushima United through June 2027.

With Japanese professional leagues set to shift to an autumn-to-spring calendar, Miura is on track to turn 60 while still playing as a professional, continuing one of the longest careers in football history.

Miura made his debut for the Japan national team in 1990, scoring 55 goals in 89 international appearances before retiring from international football in 2000 after being left out of Japan’s squad for their first World Cup appearance in 1998.
