Genoa in talks with Al-Ittihad to sign Mario Mitaj on loan

Italian club Genoa has begun formal negotiations with Saudi side Al-Ittihad to sign Albanian defender Mario Mitaj on loan, with an option to purchase at the end of the season, according to Nigeria Football.

The source indicated that Genoa is aiming to finalize the deal during the current summer transfer window, as the Italian club looks to strengthen its defense with a young player who has experience in European competitions.

Under the proposed terms, Genoa is targeting a one-season loan for Mitaj, with a clause allowing the club to buy the player outright after the loan period. Both clubs' managements are currently working to finalize the agreement, hoping to complete the transfer before the window closes.

Mitaj's career at Al-Ittihad

Mitaj, 23, joined Al-Ittihad in the summer of 2024 from Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow and quickly secured a starting spot under coaches Laurent Blanc and Sergio Conceição. The Albanian defender has made 58 appearances for Al-Ittihad in all competitions, scoring twice and providing six assists, and played a key role in the club's domestic double—winning the Saudi Pro League and King’s Cup—the season before last.

Potential return to Europe

The source noted that a possible move to Genoa would mark Mitaj’s return to European football after his stint with Lokomotiv Moscow. Genoa’s interest is part of a strategy to reinforce the defense with a player who combines youth and experience. Should the deal go through, Al-Ittihad may need to restructure its back line, as Mitaj has become a key player since joining the Saudi club.
