Saudi Film Commission announces 2027 Oscar submission rules for best international feature

The Saudi Film Commission on Thursday announced the official rules, eligibility criteria, and nomination process for selecting the film that will represent the Kingdom in the best international feature film category at the 99th Academy Awards, in line with the regulations of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The commission stated that the rules cover film eligibility requirements, nomination procedures, and the process for selecting the nominated film, aiming to support Saudi films’ access to major international awards and strengthen their global competitiveness.

Independent committee to evaluate films

The commission noted that an independent nomination committee, comprising leading specialists and experts from the film sector, will be formed to review eligible applications, evaluate them, and vote to select the film that will represent Saudi Arabia, in accordance with Oscar guidelines.

Eligibility requirements and criteria

The rules stipulate that the film must be a feature-length narrative exceeding 40 minutes, with more than 51% of its dialogue in a non-English language. It must also meet the requirement of a commercial theatrical release in Saudi Arabia for at least seven consecutive days with paid tickets, and must not have been broadcast or distributed prior to its qualifying theatrical screening, in addition to other approved eligibility conditions.

The commission invited filmmakers interested in submitting their works to review the rules and eligibility criteria and ensure all requirements are met before applying.
