In line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative, and coinciding with the launch of the 2026 National Afforestation Season under the slogan “A Generation Plants... for a Thriving Nation,” Jazan University has developed a comprehensive strategic approach focused on environmental sustainability, protecting natural resources, and expanding green spaces, alongside its academic and research excellence.

Institutional commitment to a greener future

Abdullah bin Musa Shubair, Vice President of Jazan University, said the start of the National Afforestation Season reflects an ambitious and sustainable vision set by the Kingdom’s leadership for building a greener future.

He added, “Protecting the environment and developing vegetation cover is a national responsibility and a trust for a generation working diligently to rehabilitate land and enhance ecological balance.”

Dr. Shubair reaffirmed the university’s full commitment to institutional cooperation with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, emphasizing the mobilization of academic and research resources and the activation of volunteer initiatives to increase green areas on campus and instill environmental awareness among students.

Smart partnerships to reduce emissions

To advance this strategy, the university signed a strategic agreement with Zero Neutral to develop innovative environmental solutions that help reduce carbon emissions and support the goals of the Saudi Green and Middle East Green Initiatives. The university launched this partnership with a flagship initiative to plant 11,000 smart trees on campus, successfully completing the first phase by planting 3,000 trees.

Full marks on the afforestation platform

Abadi bin Mohammed Mashlawi, Acting Director of the Center for Environmental and Nature Research and Head of the Biology Department, noted that the university achieved 100% of its national targets in the National Afforestation Program by planting 38,946 trees in a short period last year, earning full marks on the afforestation platform in the Jazan region.

Dr. Mashlawi added that the total number of trees and flowers planted to date has reached approximately 60,821, distributed across 24 locations within the university. He highlighted the focus on green spaces by planting species suited to the region, such as Poinciana, neem, and bougainvillea, in student housing, around colleges, and near the university mosque, contributing to lower temperatures and improved air quality.

Volunteer work and community engagement

Areej Basahi, Director of Community Service, emphasized the university’s commitment to involving students and staff in environmental volunteer opportunities to turn the concept of sustainability into practical action. She added, “Students are at the heart of these efforts, and we aim to build a generation that is aware, responsible for its environment, and capable of achieving the nation’s future ambitions.”
