Researcher: Riyadh heritage project documents 180 key modern landmarks

Historian Ali Abu Aloua praised the project to register and code 180 modern architectural heritage landmarks in Riyadh.

Speaking in an interview with Al Ekhbariya Radio, he said the project was carried out in cooperation with the Heritage Commission, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, and the Riyadh Municipality. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to document and preserve modern architectural heritage as a key component of Saudi Arabia’s cultural identity.

Abu Aloua added that the project includes buildings and structures that represent significant milestones in Riyadh’s twentieth-century history. These sites have shaped the city’s architectural character, documented its phases of growth and development, and now stand as architectural witnesses reflecting the urban memory of the Kingdom and the evolution of construction and urban planning during that era.

The work involved documenting the sites, adding them to the architectural heritage register, and installing standardized information plaques with digital codes to highlight their heritage value and strengthen their presence in the urban landscape.
