Jazan University today launched a series of innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, protecting natural resources, and increasing green cover, coinciding with the start of the 2026 National Afforestation Season under the slogan "A Generation Plants... For a Thriving Nation." The initiatives support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the "Saudi Green Initiative."

Abdullah bin Mousa Shubair, Vice President of Jazan University, stated that the National Afforestation Season reflects an ambitious and sustainable vision, emphasizing the importance of environmental protection and vegetation development as a national responsibility that contributes to land rehabilitation and environmental balance.

Shubair highlighted the university's commitment to institutional cooperation with the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification, leveraging academic and research capabilities, and activating volunteer initiatives to increase green spaces and raise environmental awareness among students.

Innovative agreements and initiatives

As part of its environmental strategy, the university signed a strategic agreement with Zero Neutral Company to develop innovative environmental solutions that help reduce carbon emissions and support the objectives of the "Saudi Green Initiative" and the "Middle East Green Initiative." Under this agreement, the university launched a project to plant 11,000 smart trees on campus, with the first phase already seeing 3,000 trees planted.

Abadi bin Mohammed Mashlawi, Acting Director of the Center for Environmental and Nature Research and Head of the Biology Department, noted that the university achieved 100% of its national targets in the National Afforestation Program, planting 38,946 trees last year and earning a perfect score on the afforestation platform in the Jazan region.

Achievements and expanding green spaces

Mashlawi added that the university has so far planted approximately 60,821 trees and flowers across 24 locations on campus, focusing on species suited to the region such as Poinciana, Neem, and Bougainvillea, particularly in student housing, around colleges, and near the university mosque. These efforts contribute to lowering temperatures and improving air quality.

Active community participation

Areej Basahi, Director of Community Service at Jazan University, emphasized the university's commitment to involving students and staff in environmental volunteer opportunities and translating the concept of sustainability into practical actions. She noted that students play a central role in these efforts to build a generation that is aware and responsible toward its environment.
