Saudi-US nuclear cooperation agreement marks new chapter in partnership

The signing of the agreement between Saudi Arabia and the United States on peaceful uses of nuclear energy marks the culmination of months of negotiations. The process began with an official announcement of the completion of talks during the visit of Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman to the US last November, and concluded with the signing of the agreement that establishes the legal framework for civilian nuclear cooperation between the two countries.

During the Crown Prince's visit to the United States in November, both sides announced that negotiations on peaceful nuclear energy cooperation had been completed. From negotiations to signing

After completing the necessary legal and technical procedures, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, Minister of Energy and Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, signed the agreement with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. The two sides also signed a bilateral nuclear safeguards agreement.

In the US, the agreement is known as a "123 Agreement," which provides the legal framework for civilian nuclear cooperation between the United States and partner countries. It enables collaboration in peaceful nuclear technology under US and international regulations.

Strategic partnership beyond energy

Saudi Arabia has stated that the agreement is part of the broader strategic partnership between the two countries, aiming to enhance cooperation in peaceful nuclear energy, support the exchange of expertise, knowledge, and technology, and promote joint development in line with the highest international standards for nuclear security, safety, and non-proliferation.

The agreement also reflects the shared vision of Riyadh and Washington to expand cooperation in energy and future technologies, support sustainable development, and boost investment and economic collaboration between the two nations.

The agreement is not the starting point for Saudi-US energy relations, but rather an extension of a long history of cooperation. This partnership now advances into the more technologically sophisticated field of peaceful nuclear energy.
