Environment ministry highlights tree planting’s role in cooling and quality of life

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has emphasized that tree planting is one of the most effective natural solutions for mitigating the impact of rising temperatures during the summer. The ministry highlighted the significant role of trees in cooling the environment, improving air quality, and promoting environmental sustainability, in line with Saudi Vision 2030.

The ministry explained that trees help lower temperatures by providing shade and reducing heat absorption on pavements and rooftops. Additionally, the process of transpiration allows trees to release water vapor, which helps cool the surrounding air and enhances quality of life in cities, parks, and open spaces.

It added that tree planting creates suitable environments for recreation and outdoor activities, encourages physical activity, and can absorb up to an average of 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually.

Diverse environmental and health benefits

The ministry noted that increasing green spaces has a positive impact on human health by reducing stress and improving mental well-being. Trees also purify air from pollutants, which helps reduce disease and noise pollution, aids in rainwater management, and supports biodiversity by providing habitats for wildlife and pollinators.

Call to choose native trees and proper irrigation practices

The ministry urged the public to select native tree species that are best adapted to the Kingdom’s climate and require less water, enhancing the efficient use of natural resources and increasing the success and sustainability of tree planting projects.

It also called for the adoption of proper agricultural practices to maintain trees during the summer, such as choosing the right time for irrigation and using drip irrigation systems, which can reduce water loss through evaporation by up to 50 percent compared to traditional methods. The ministry also recommended using organic mulch around trees to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and limit weed growth.

The ministry affirmed that tree planting is a long-term investment in the environment, people, and the future of coming generations, and contributes to enhancing urban landscapes and improving quality of life.
